Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Kigali Arrival and Vehicle Pick-Up
Your trip starts in Kigali, where you collect your self-drive 4×4 and settle into the rhythm of the journey. If time allows, explore the Kigali Genocide Memorial, local craft markets, or one of the city viewpoints before overnighting in the capital or heading north toward Musanze.

Day 2: Drive to Volcanoes National Park
Leave Kigali behind and head north through Rwanda’s green hills and terraced farmlands. The drive to Musanze is scenic and relaxed, with plenty of photo-worthy landscapes along the way. After check-in, enjoy a quiet evening near Volcanoes National Park.

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda
Today is the first major wildlife highlight. After an early briefing at park headquarters, you head into Volcanoes National Park for your gorilla trek. The hike can be short or demanding depending on the gorilla family’s location, but the hour spent with mountain gorillas is one of Africa’s most memorable wildlife experiences.

Day 4: Cross into Uganda and Continue to Bwindi
After breakfast, cross the border into Uganda and continue toward Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The drive feels like a new chapter in the trip, with changing terrain, forested hills, and rural villages replacing Rwanda’s open highlands. Arrive in time to rest and prepare for the next day’s trek.

Day 5: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi
Bwindi brings a second gorilla encounter, this time in one of Uganda’s most iconic rainforests. The trekking conditions are often steeper and wetter, but the reward is just as powerful: a close look at a habituated gorilla family in the wild.

Day 6: Bwindi to Queen Elizabeth National Park
Move on from the forested highlands to Uganda’s safari country. If time and route allow, pass through the Ishasha sector for a chance to spot tree-climbing lions before continuing to your lodge inside or near Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Day 7: Game Drive and Kazinga Channel Cruise
Start early with a game drive across Queen Elizabeth’s savannah plains, where elephants, buffaloes, lions, and antelope species are commonly seen. Later in the day, take a boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel, a wildlife-rich waterway known for hippos, crocodiles, and dense birdlife.

Day 8: Travel to Kibale Forest
Leave the savannah behind and drive toward Kibale, Uganda’s famous primate region. This is a quieter travel day, giving you time to enjoy the changing scenery and settle into your lodge before the chimpanzee tracking experience.

Day 9: Chimpanzee Tracking in Kibale
Kibale Forest is the perfect place to end the wildlife portion of the trip. After breakfast and briefing, head into the forest to track chimpanzees as they move rapidly through the canopy. The experience is lively, energetic, and a great contrast to the slower pace of gorilla trekking.

Day 10: Return Journey to Kigali or Continue to Entebbe
Your final day is flexible depending on your travel plans. You can drive back to Kigali or continue onward to Entebbe/Kampala, wrapping up a full self-drive safari that combines two countries, multiple parks, and a rich mix of wildlife and scenery.
